Field trip to OZMinerals Prominent Hill Mine Site

Posted on 09 October 2010 by Ailsa

First year mining students at University of Adelaide have just come back from a five days field trip taking them to two mines.  Starting out with Copper at the OZMinerals Prominent Hill Mine Site the students stayed overnight (big thank you to OZMinerals for their hospitality and great food!).  Students were shown the open pit and the processing plant including the mining fleet maintenance workshop. Day four was spent underground at the Dominion Mining Limited Challenger Gold Mine.  Here they were taken underground and saw drilling, remote loading, rock support installation, ventilation, underground exploration, refuge chambers and did a bit of geotechnical mapping in one of the drives.  They were also taken around the mill that uses the CIP (carbon-in-pulp) process and were  shown the new tailings storage facility. Students roughed it this time sleeping in tents but everyone was happy.  A big thank you to Mine Manager Paul Adrovic and staff for their great hospitality and learning opportunities.
